10 Web Design Mistakes That Cost You Clients
These 10 web design mistakes are responsible for most clients lost online. Check whether your site is making them — and how to fix them quickly.
Most websites in Moldova don't lose clients because of pricing or competition. They lose them because of design mistakes that can be fixed. Here are the ten most common ones.
1. Unclear message on the homepage
You have 5 seconds to tell a visitor what you do and why they should stay. If your headline reads "Welcome to [Company Name]" or something equally vague, you've already lost a portion of your visitors.
Fix: Your main headline should answer: "What do you do, for whom, and what will they get?"
2. No visible call-to-action
If visitors don't know what to do next, they won't do anything. Contact, quote, or purchase buttons must be visible without scrolling.
Fix: A large, high-contrast button above the fold (the visible area before scrolling).
3. Site that doesn't work on mobile
Over 60% of web traffic comes from mobile phones. A site that looks broken on mobile sends a clear signal: you're not professional.
Fix: Test your site on a real phone, not just in a browser. If the text is too small, buttons are too close together, or images are cropped — a redesign is needed.
4. Slow loading speed
Every extra second of load time reduces your conversion rate by a few percentage points. At 4+ seconds, many users leave for good.
Fix: Use Google PageSpeed Insights to check your speed. The most common causes: unoptimized images, poor hosting, and excess JavaScript.
5. Too much text, too little visual
Pages packed with large blocks of text are overwhelming. Visitors scan, they don't read — and if they don't quickly find what they're looking for, they leave.
Fix: Break text into short sections, use clear headings, icons, and relevant images. Less text, more clarity.
6. Hard-to-read fonts and colors
Light grey text on a white background, 12px font, overly long lines — all of these make reading harder and strain the eyes.
Fix: Sufficient contrast (check with a WCAG contrast tool), a minimum of 16px for body text, and lines no longer than 70–80 characters.
7. No social proof
Testimonials, reviews, client logos, concrete numbers — these build the trust that your words alone cannot.
Fix: Add at least 2–3 genuine testimonials with names and photos. If possible, include a concrete figure: "40 satisfied clients in 2 years."
8. Contact form that's too long
Every additional field in a form reduces the completion rate. Asking for ID numbers, dates of birth, or other irrelevant details at the contact stage is a common mistake.
Fix: A minimal form: Name, Email, Message. That's it. You can gather the rest of the details in conversation.
9. Generic stock photos
Photos of smiling people in suits shaking hands in sterile offices — everyone recognizes stock imagery and ignores it. It builds no connection.
Fix: Real photos of your team, products, or workspace. If you don't have them, at least choose stock images that are less obvious and more relevant to your industry.
10. No clear contact information
If visitors can't easily find a phone number or email address, they leave. Contact details must be visible in the header and on a dedicated contact page.
Fix: Phone number and email in the header or top bar. A contact page with Google Maps if you have a physical office.
